What is a Blepharoplasty?

It is a minor surgical procedure where excess fat and skin are removed under the upper and lower eyelids.

Adjustment or creation of double eyelid folds can also be carried out if required.

Who can undergo a Blepharoplasty?

Men or women who are generally healthy and who wish to remove excess skin and fat under their upper and lower eyelids.

Individuals who have thyroid problems, dry eyes, high blood pressure, diabetes or any circulatory problems are advised to consult the doctor before undergoing the procedure.

How long is the procedure?

From one and half to three hours

After the procedure:

• Avoid strenuous activities or sports for one week
• Avoid going out into direct sunlight for one week
• When sleeping, elevate head with additional pillows to reduce swelling and bleeding.
• As your condition improves, you may resume normal activities
• There are no restrictions on your diet
• Avoid applying make-up or any chemical substances around the affected area.
• Do not use contact lens until stitches have been removed.
• You can resume swimming 3 weeks later.

Are there any side effects?

• Double or blurred vision for a few days
• Temporary swelling at the corner of the eyelids
• Some patients may have slight difficulty in closing their eyes when they sleep.
• The eyelids may feel tired and sore when the anesthesia wears off.
• The eyes will be sensitive to light but this is only temporary.

How soon can I expect to see the effects?

Healing is gradual and takes time. The results will be apparent after about 2 – 3 weeks after all the swelling and bruising have subsided.
