What is Rhinoplasty?
Also known as a ‘nose job’, Rhinoplasty is cosmetic surgery of the nose. Asymmetries or defects from trauma or birth can be corrected by breaking the bones of the nose and realigning them.
It can soften the features and enhance one’s self-confidence.
Where can it be used?
- On the ‘hump’ of the nose and other parts of it which require correction.
- At the nose bridge (elevation).
- Nostrils (narrowing).
Who can go for Rhinoplasty?
- Extensive nasal surgery is avoided in children because certain growth centres in the nose affect the growth of the face.
- Less severe deformities in children are only operated on when they have stopped growing.
- Teenagers and adults who wish to have more refined features are suitable candidates.
How long is the procedure?
Approximately from one and a half hours depending on the complexity of the nature of the operation.
After the procedure:
- A cast or splint will be placed over the nose. It will be removed 7 days after surgery.
- Avoid any strenuous activity which may subject the nose to any impact (eg ball games)
- Arrange for someone to bring you home.
Are there any side effects?
All surgeries carry some form of risk and complications may develop. Some include:
- The nose will be sensitive for 2 months.
- Some people may experience some difficulty in breathing.
- Although rare, tiny red marks may appear on the skin and not go away.
- Sense of smell may be lost for a few months but it will return.
How soon can I expect to see the effects?
Immediately, although the nose will be swollen. The optimal result is seen in 4 weeks.
