What are the causes of breathing problems?

I frequently have breathing problems when I wake up in the morning. It causes me to cough really badly and I will be gasping for air in a short while. I will also be perspiring by the end of this. Please kindly advise.

There are several possibilities to be considered, of which the most likely would be due to a drip originating from the nose that affects the throat, voice box or air passages. This happens most commonly in the morning. The irritating effect of the post nasal drip would trigger spasms of coughing and also constriction of the airway, thus resulting in wheezing. Post nasal drip of this nature can be secondary to Sinusitis or Allergies. Sinusitis results from infection or obstruction of the sinus air spaces located in the face. Allergies on the other hand, can be due to inhalant or even food allergies. This can also be related to bronchial hyperactivity which can be a precursor to an asthmatic condition.

The other possibility to be considered is whether the episode described represents a sleep apnoea incident. Sleep apnoea means that there is a cessation of air flow of at least 10 seconds that occurs during sleep. This means that there is obstruction to the upper airway. The coughing is then a result of the body’s reaction stimulating the patient to breathe again.

A full examination and assessment by an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor would be advisable. After a diagnosis has been established, treatment would then be advised accordingly.
