CEREC (Ceramic Reconstruction or Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) is a modern method of creating teeth restorations. Using computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing, CEREC makes it possible to create high quality, long lasting restorations, while keeping your smile looking and feeling natural.
CEREC is usually used to make the following restorations:
- Ceramic Crowns
- Ceramic Onlays & Inlays
- Ceramic Veneers
If the dentist finds your tooth suitable for a CEREC restoration, he or she will use a digital camera scanner to take a 3D image of your tooth after preparing it for the indicated restoration. This 3D image is displayed onto a computer screen, which the dentist will use to design the restoration. The design data will then be sent to a milling unit for the actual restoration to be created. After the restoration is created, the dentist will polish it, check its fit and bite, and bond it to your tooth. The whole process can be completed within the same day.

Benefits of CEREC
Convenient. A conventional process to create a crown, inlay, onlay or veneer involves at least two visits to the dentist. On the first visit, the dentists will take an impression of your tooth. You are required to wait for 2 weeks with a temporary restoration in place while the actual restoration is being made in a dental laboratory. Once the restoration is ready, you will return to the dentist’s office again for the restoration to be bonded to your teeth.
With CEREC, the process is shortened. You do not have to make multiple visits to the dentist. It takes a single day for the restoration to be designed, created, and bonded to your teeth.
Comfortable. Traditional restoration methods use dental impressions to create moulds of your teeth. CEREC creates the impressions digitally, which is cleaner and more comfortable for you. Digital impressions are also more accurate, which makes the restoration and your bite feel more natural.
Durable. Traditional dental restorations are usually made with a combination of metals and ceramic. On the other hand, CEREC restorations are made from a solid block of ceramic, making it more resistant to cracks or fissures, which improves its durability.
