Dr Fong Sau Shung

Profile:

Dr Fong Sau Shung is a specialist in general surgery with a subspecialty interest in colorectal surgery. He graduated from the National University of Singapore, Faculty of Medicine, in 2001, received his postgraduate Master of Medicine degree in 2007, exited as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and entered into the register of specialists in Singapore, in 2011. He has since completed a fellowship program under the hospital manpower development program, for the treatment of advanced and recurrent colorectal cancer with Professor Peter Sagar in Leeds, United Kingdom in 2013.

Prior to joining Raffles Hospital, Dr Fong held multiple positions both within and outside of Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH). During his tenure in TTSH, he was the head of the Colorectal Service (2017- 2019) and Director of the Endoscopy Center (2016-2019). He held the position of Honorary Secretary of the Society of Colorectal Surgeons Singapore (2015-2017). He is also a founding member of the Robotic Society of Singapore. Dr Fong has a keen interest in quality improvement projects and was the clinical lead in the TTSH ‘Better Colonoscopy’ and ‘Better Colectomy’ programs based on the Geisinger ‘Provencare’ approach, as well as being the co-clinical lead in the TTSH enhanced recovery after surgery initiative in 2017.

Dr Fong’s primary interest is in minimally invasive surgery, including robotic surgery and advanced transanal endoscopic techniques. He practises minimally invasive lateral pelvic lymph node dissection for involved internal iliac lymph nodes in rectal cancer. He has also served as proctor for the technique of transanal total mesorectal excision in Singapore and robotic rectal cancer resection in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. He is a proponent of colonic cancer stenting as a bridge to surgery.
