Question:

I am in my early 40s. My husband and I are planning to have a baby. Is there are any fertility pills that can help me to conceive immediately? Do fertility pills really work?

Answer:

As you are 41 years old, time is of essence. You and your husband need to see a gynaecologist to check if you have any conditions which can affect fertility and conception. These tests include screening for anemia, Thalessemia and immunity against Rubella infection, PAP smear, hormone tests for ovarian reserves (egg reserves), pelvic ultrasound for fibroids and cysts and a semen analysis for the husband.

Tests to check the fallopian tubes for blockage may also be advised. These tests are needed as gynaecological diseases such as endometriosis and fibroids are more common once a woman is above 40 years old and can impact on her chances of conception.

Diseases such as Thalessemia, anaemia, hypertension, diabetes and thyroid disease can also affect the pregnancy once you conceive. Fertility pills are meant for women who do not ovulate. Your gynaecologist may prescribe fertility pills if you have an ovulation problem.

There is no quick or immediate method to conceive. Try to have intercourse at least two to three times a week, abstain from alcohol and smoking and see your gynaecologist to determine if you and your husband need further help.
