A child's vision develops rapidly during the first few years of life. From recognising light and colour to developing depth perception and visual coordination, each stage plays an important role in how they learn and interact with the world.

  • 1 MONTH

    At birth, the world is very bright. While their central vision is still developing, infants rely on peripheral vision to see their surroundings.

    The world becomes more colourful. Red is often the first colour infants recognise. Occasional eye crossing is normal, but persistent turning may need a check for strabismus.

    Infants begin seeing in 3D as depth perception develops, making it easier to reach for toys. Their colour vision is also nearly fully developed.

    My child passed a school eye screening. Do they still need an eye examination?

    Possibly. School eye screenings identify common vision problems but do not assess eye coordination, depth perception, subtle refractive errors such as pre-myopia, or overall eye health. A comprehensive paediatric eye examination provides a more complete assessment.
