When is circumcision done?
Circumcision is the surgical removal of the penis foreskin. It is usually done in the following situations:
- Treat recurring foreskin infections and tears
- Treat a tight foreskin (phimosis)
- For religious purposes
How is circumcision done?
Circumcision is a minor procedure, and is usually done as a day surgery procedure under general anaesthesia. The foreskin is removed, and the wound will be stitched with dissolvable sutures. You will be given painkillers to manage the pain after the anaesthesia wears off. After the circumcision, the tip of the penis will be exposed permanently.
You may experience some initial discomfort when passing urine after the procedure. Your circumcised penis may appear red, raw, and swollen for up to two weeks. If you get an erection while your wound is healing, your sutures may break open and cause you some pain.
What should I do after circumcision surgery to promote wound healing?
To allow your circumcised penis to heal, you would need to:
- Wear loose underwear
- Avoid sexual or physical activity until wound is healed
(Sexual activity may be resumed after four to six weeks.) - Drink plenty of water to reduce the acidity of urine
