If your child has a sensitive nose, skin, or wheezes frequently, he or she may be atopic, or have the genetic tendency to develop allergic illnesses.
Common atopic conditions your child may experience include allergic asthma, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis.
Allergic Asthma
Children with allergic asthma may experience chronic airway inflammation. This may result in frequent wheezing, coughing, chest tightness and shortness of breath, especially during physically intensive activities.
If you suspect your child to have allergic asthma, make an appointment to consult a paediatrician. We can help to assess and confirm your child’s symptoms. For older children, we will do a lung function test to assess their airways.
It is important for your child to remain active to improve his or her lung reserves. We may also prescribe inhalers and oral medications to control the symptoms.
Allergic Rhinitis / Conjunctivitis
Allergic rhinitis / conjunctivitis is another common atopic condition which affects the nasal passageway and eyes. Your child may have a runny or blocked nose and/or frequent sneezing. He / She may also have itchy eyes that tears frequently. Make an appointment with us to confirm if your child is allergic. A skin prick test or blood test may be done to confirm the symptoms. If your child has allergic rhinitis or conjunctivitis, the paediatrician may prescribe nasal medication or eye drops to control the symptoms.
Atopic Dermatitis
Your child may have atopic dermatitis if his or her skin itches frequently, which can be distressing for him or her. A skin prick test and blood tests can be administered to test for skin allergies. While there is no cure for the condition, it can be controlled with topical creams and proper counselling.
