Infant and Newborn Screening
To ensure your baby is healthy, you can have your baby screened for any potentially life-threatening disorders. Here are some screening tests that we provide at Raffles Children's Centre.
Universal Newborn Hearing Screening
About 1 in 1,000 babies in Singapore has significant hearing impairment at birth. Early detection and intervention can prevent delays in language acquisition and intellectual development.
Newborn Metabolic Screening Programme
A simple heel prick test can screen for rare but potentially serious disorders, such as phenylketonuria (PKU), cystic fibrosis, and congenital hypothyroidism.

Treatment of Infant and Neonatal Conditions
Our paediatricians also manage and treat common infant and neonatal conditions including:
Cradle Cap
Cradle cap, or infantile seborrheic dermatitis, is a common condition mostly affecting newborns. It may appear as patchy yellowish scales or thick crusts on your baby’s scalp or eyebrows. The condition is not painful or itchy, and will usually clear up on its own with time. However, if your baby’s cradle cap is severe, you may want to consider getting it treated. Your paediatrician will prescribe creams or shampoo for your baby.
Colic
Your baby may be colicky if he or she cries uncontrollably despite being healthy. Colic usually begins when your baby is a few weeks old, and stops when he or she reaches around four to six months old. The crying spells usually start in the evening, and last for around two to three hours. Your baby may pass gas or stool at the end of the crying episode.
When should I see a paediatrician if my baby cries uncontrollably?
Even though colic is not a disease and does not cause long-term harm to your baby, it can be a distressing experience for you and your baby. You should see your paediatrician about your baby’s crying to exclude other possible medical causes, such as reflux, intussusception, or cow’s milk allergy. During your visit, your paediatrician may also share tips or prescribe medications to reduce your baby’s crying.
Your baby may also encounter other issues such as regurgitation, blocked nose, prolonged jaundice, or rashes. Our paediatricians are able to provide medical advice and support for you and your baby.
