Caring for Your Emotional and Psychological Well Being

People who experience infertility undergo tremendous stress in their relationships. They may face emotional and psychological problems such as feelings of denial, guilt, blame, self-pity, sadness, jealousy and anger. These feelings may eventually lead to problems among family and friends.

There is no easy solution to these problems and mutual support needs to be given through communication to develop a greater understanding between the couple, family and friends. Some couples describe their infertility journey akin to being on an emotional roller coaster ride; the waiting game each month is often peppered with spurts of optimism followed by a crash when another period arrives or when the treatment fails to achieve pregnancy.

It is important for couples to care and support one another through trying times as there is always light at the end of the tunnel.

Here are some coping strategies to help you through this difficult time:

  • Read and learn as much as you can about infertility.

  • Communicate fears and emotion to your partner on a regular basis.

  • Support one another, but understand that it will be difficult to do so at times.

  • Share your problem with supportive friends or other family members.

  • Go for medical appointments together so that you both understand the tests and procedures.

  • Discuss boundaries with your partner.
