How TCM Can Complement Fertility Treatments
Common causes of infertility
Infertility from a TCM perspective
From a TCM perspective, three organs are responsible for one’s fertility – the Kidney, Liver and Spleen. These organs store and regulate the Reproductive Essence, Qi, Blood and Fluids in our body, which are essential for ensuring optimal fertility.
Infertility is caused when there is imbalance and disharmony in our body, resulting in difficulty to conceiving naturally.
This may be caused by:
- Emotional disturbances
- Irregular diet
- Effects from our surrounding environment
- Lifestyle habits
TCM Treatment Plan
Since starting a family involves both the husband and wife, we encourage both spouses to take part in the treatment together. During your first visit, your physician will conduct a thorough examination to identify issues affecting your fertility. From there, your physician will develop a customised TCM treatment course for you, lasting at least three months. A combination of TCM treatment methods may be used to improve your reproductive health. For women, you may also need to keep track of your basal body temperature (BBT) to identify your fertile period.
If you have always dreamed of starting a family and need help, send us an enquiry to find out how we can help you realise it.
IVF Booster Programme
For couples choosing to undergo Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART), you may opt to undergo an IVF booster programme. Your physician will customise the programme to improve the ART success rate.
How does it work?
Studies have found that acupuncture can enhance the outcome of ART by improving egg quality and quantity, increasing the thickness and quality of the endometrium lining, as well as supporting embryo implantation. Acupuncture can also help improve men’s sperm quality.
Treatment Plan
During the regulation phase, the treatment frequency is typically once a week. During the ovarian stimulation, the treatment frequency may range between once a week to alternate days. Your husband is also encouraged to participate in the treatment. He will undergo several sessions of acupuncture to improve his sperm quality. On the day of the embryo transfer, acupuncture will be used once before and after the transfer. To enhance implantation, your TCM physician may recommend you to undergo additional acupuncture sessions.
