Intense Pulsed Light

What is Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)?

IPL or flashlamp therapy uses high intensity pulses of visible light (not laser) to reduce skin pigmentation and fine blood vessels and to rejuvenate the skin.

Settings are chosen to selectively stimulate collagen or target fine vessels and superficial pigmentation with minimum damage to the surrounding tissue. Skin will look brighter and more radiant following the treatment.

IPL is not effective for deep scars or wrinkles.

Are there any side effects for Intense Pulsed Light treatment?

IPL is non-invasive with minimal downtime.

Short-term (hours to days) effects such as redness and darkening of pigment spots may occur. These can be covered with makeup. Avoid any products that may irritate the skin during this period such as retinol or glycolic acid.

If desired, a topical anaesthetic may be applied 30 minutes before treatment to ensure a more comfortable experience.

When is Intense Pulsed Light treatment not recommended?

If you are:

  • Pregnant
  • On medication that increases photosensitivity
  • Have a history of sun sensitivity
  • Are of a darker skin type

Prolonged sun exposure should be avoided two weeks before and after treatment.
