Vitiligo

What is vitiligo?

Vitiligo is a skin disorder that presents as white spots and patches on the skin. This skin condition is not contagious. It is a condition that results in a progressive loss of the pigment melanin, which gives our skin its colour and protection from harmful ultraviolet rays.

This loss of pigment occurs when pigment cells called melanocytes are destroyed and melanin cannot be produced.

What is the cause?

The cause for  vitiligo remains unknown, although those suffering from vitiligo have a higher incidence of association with:

  • Diabetes
  • Thyroid disease
  • Autoimmune diseases

Common sites affected include:

  • Bony surfaces like back of hands, fingers, elbows, and knees
  • Around body orifices like the eyes, mouth, and nose
  • Body folds like armpits, and groin
  • Other areas like legs, wrists, and genitalia

Vitiligo treatment options include:

  • Topical creams / ointments containing steroids or calcineurin-inhibitors
  • Phototherapy / Excimer laser
  • Camouflage cosmetics
  • Use of sunscreen

Living with Vitiligo:

  • Take care of yourself. Take time to apply your medication regularly and follow the doctor’s recommended treatment plan.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and wear sunscreen at all times. Areas affected by vitiligo are prone to sunburn as they are devoid of protective pigment.
