HPV – Prevention and Screening

Human papilloma virus (HPV) is a sexually transmitted disease which can increase the risks of genital warts and cancers of the cervix, vagina, vulva and anus.

HPV infection is the main cause of cervical cancer in women.

Currently, the MOH recommendation is for women aged 30 years and above to have HPV Screening every 5 years. HPV screening is not indicated for women below the age of 30.

Between 25-29 years old, the recommended screening is via a Pap smear if the woman has ever been sexually active.

Pap smears can continue to be done every 3 years till the age of 65.

To reduce your risk of HPV infection, you can take the HPV vaccination.

What is Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)?

HPV is a group of more than 150 related viruses, with each virus given a number (HPV type). HPV is transmitted through intimate skin-to-skin contact, and an infected person can show no signs or symptoms.

HPV Screening

Screening for HPV can be done during a Pap smear, or a self-screening test kit (Delphi Screener).

Delphi Screener test kit

The Delphi Screener self-sampler is an easy-to-use self-screening tool for HPV detection in sexually active women aged 30 and above.

It uses a unique lavage method to collect cells without scraping. It is a convenient option that is pain-free and it can be done quickly in the privacy and comfort of your home.

How-to-use instructions as well as video are provided with the test kit. The test kit must be returned to the clinic within 48 hours of sample collection.

How often should HPV screening be done? Is it different from a Pap smear?

It is recommended that a HPV screening be done every 5 years. A Pap smear screens for abnormal cells in the cervix, while a HPV screening (Delphi screener) tests for the HPV virus, which can cause cervical cancer.

Who can use the Delphi Screener test kit?

Any sexually active women aged 30 and above.

What does the test kit do?

The test kit uses a lavage system to collect cervical cells that will be tested for high risk HPV strain 16 and 18 as well as non 16/18 HPV viruses.

How will I be notified of test results?

The clinic that you return the test kit to, will arrange an appointment for you to see the doctor to discuss the results of the test when it is available.
