Profile:

A/Prof Tan is a Specialist in Ophthalmology. He obtained his MBBS from the National University of Singapore in 2002. Upon completion of his specialist training, he was conferred fellowship with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (Ophthalmology), Royal College of Ophthalmologists (UK), and the Academy of Medicine, Singapore. He was awarded Best Candidate in Corneal and Refractive Surgery, Glaucoma and Neuro-ophthalmology at his Ophthalmology Exit Exams. As a recipient of MOH training scholarship, he underwent further cornea and refractive surgery sub-specialist training with Professor Simon Holland, at the University of British Columbia, Canada. He then concluded a stint at the renowned Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, USA. He is currently Adjunct Associate Professor with Lee Kong Chian (LKC) School of Medicine.

Prior to joining Raffles Hospital, A/Prof Tan was a Senior Consultant and Deputy Head of Cornea and Refractive Surgery Sub-specialty at TTSH, where he found his footing as a clinician and educator. Through the years, he took up various responsibilities, including member of the advisory board at Singapore Eye Bank, examiner for undergraduate and Masters of Medicine (Ophthalmology) examinations, and Deputy Chairman of Clinic Management Committee.

A/Prof Tan has been the Principal Lead for Ophthalmology since the inception of LKC School of Medicine. Besides designing the Ophthalmology undergraduate curriculum, he had also taught successive cohorts of students, imparting his central practicing ethos of upholding professional and ethical patient care at every turn. He was involved in the training for medical students from NUS YLL School of Medicine, Ophthalmology residents, and both local and overseas fellows. For his commitment to educating future generations of physicians, he was awarded Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence by YLL School of Medicine, Best Teacher award and Top 10 Teachers in TTSH numerous times. He also published more than 10 research papers in peer reviewed journals and made more than 40 presentations at international and regional scientific conferences, earning accolades for his good work.

A/Prof Tan’s area of clinical expertise includes Femtosecond “bladeless” LASIK, “no-touch” TransPRK, various forms of complex corneal transplantation (DALK, DSAEK, DMEK), pterygium surgery, ocular surface diseases and reconstruction, keratoconus, contact lens-related diseases, and dry eyes. His clinical interests include cataract surgery with implantation of multifocal and toric intraocular lens for the correction of presbyopia and astigmatism.
