Profile:

Dr Melvyn Zhang is a Specialist in Psychiatry. He graduated from the National University of Singapore in 2011 and completed his postgraduate training, attaining his Diploma in Clinical Psychiatry from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Ireland in 2013 and his Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 2014. He was awarded Fellowship of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore in 2016, and subsequently achieved Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (UK) in 2025.

Prior to joining Raffles Hospital, Dr Zhang practised at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH), where he served as the Acting Deputy Chief of the National Addictions Management Service (NAMS). During his tenure, he led the adolescent addictions team, delivering crucial interventions to young individuals across inpatient and outpatient clinical services, as well as residential homes such as the Singapore Boys’ Home and Singapore Girls’ Home.

An active contributor to medical education and research, Dr Zhang was awarded the prestigious National Medical Research Council Research Training Fellowship to pursue his PhD at Nanyang Technological University, which he completed in 2023. His research focused on mobile attention bias modification interventions for addictive disorders. Dr Zhang has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and authored academic textbooks, including Mastering Psychiatry: A Core Textbook for Undergraduates and titles within the Get Through MRCPsych series. His dedication to teaching has been recognised with the NUS Teaching Award and the National Healthcare Group Senior Doctor Teaching Award. In 2025, his research impact was further acknowledged by his inclusion in the international citation ranking published by Elsevier.

Dr Zhang’s clinical expertise encompasses adult psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, and addiction psychiatry, with a specialised focus on both substance and behavioural addictions. Given his deep expertise in gaming-related disorders, he served as a Ministry of Health workgroup member, contributing to the national guidance on screen use in children, and authored the clinical guide Navigating Internet Gaming Disorder: A Manual for Helping Professionals. He is committed to providing comprehensive, evidence-based care to help patients navigate both psychiatric conditions and the complex mental health challenges arising from physical illnesses.
