MediShield Life

MediShield Life is a basic health insurance plan administered by the CPF Board. It protects all Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents against large hospital bills for life, regardless of age or health condition. Selected high cost outpatient treatment such as dialysis and chemotherapy for cancer are included.

MediShield Life is sized for subsidised treatments in public hospitals and is pegged at B2/C-type wards. If you choose to stay in an A/B1-type ward or in a private hospital, you are still covered by MediShield Life. However, you will find that your MediShield Life payout covers only a small proportion of your bill.

Your MediShield Life includes co-insurance and / or deductible. You would need to draw from MediSave and / or cash to pay the balance.

Co-insurance

Co-insurance is a percentage of the claimable amount that you have to pay. Under MediShield Life, the co-insurance* rate ranges from 3 to 10 per cent.

Deductible

Deductible is the fixed amount you have to pay before MediShield Life payout starts. You only have to pay this once per policy year.

Private Integrated Shield Plan (IP)

The major insurance companies in Singapore offer a selection of Integrated Shield Plans to suit the level of coverage you require based on the type of ward or hospital you prefer.

If you have a private Integrated Shield Plan, your insurance plan will comprise:

  • MediShield Life
  • Private insurance coverage for the costs of treatment in B1 or A class wards in the public hospitals or private hospitals

Your Integrated Shield Plan may include co-insurance and / or deductible.

Rider

If you have a rider plan purchased before 8 March 2019, you get to have additional coverage to pay for partial, or 100 per cent of the deductibles and co-insurance.

For integrated shield plan riders purchased after 8 March 2019, there is a co-payment of at least five per cent.
